NIHR Receives a Delegation from the US House of Representatives and Senate Officials

The Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), Ms. Maria Khoury, received at the NIHR’s headquarters in Seed District a delegation comprising a number of the US House of Representatives and Senate Officials. The meeting was attended by a number of the members of the Council of Commissioners and NIHR’s Secretariat General.

At the beginning of the meeting, Ms. Khoury welcomed the visiting delegation and reviewed the NIHR’s role in the dissemination, promotion and protection of human rights pursuant to the mandates entrusted to it as per its Incorporation Law, its advisory role in making recommendations on human rights to the relevant authorities, its handling of human right situation in the Kingdom of Bahrain and its continued attention to enhancing communication with all at the regional and international level, noting at the same time the positive steps taken by the Kingdom of Bahrain in the promotion and protection of human rights.

Ms. Khoury also gave a briefing on the NIHR’s mechanism of receiving complaints and providing legal assistance, as well as the NIHR’s role in making declared and undeclared visits to the places of detention in accordance with the international standards for human rights, and the NIHR’s role in the submission of periodic and parallel reports to the international bodies of the UN and its attendance of court hearings to ensure the presence of fair trial guarantees.
